The Shepherds and Angels
Luke 2:8-20
- That night, some shepherds were out in the fields near Bethlehem watching their sheep.
- An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them and they were terrified. [Note]
- But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid! Listen carefully, for I proclaim to you good news that brings great joy to all the people:
- Today, your Savior was born in the city of David. He is Christ the Lord.
- And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”
13. Suddenly a vast, heavenly army appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14. "Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased."
- When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
- So they hurried off and located Mary and Joseph, and found the baby lying in a manger.
- After seeing Him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child.
- All who heard the shepherds’ story were astonished.
- And Mary quietly treasured these things in her heart and thought about them often.
- The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. It was just as the angel had told them.

- Shekinah
- This is a Hebrew word meaning, “that which dwells.” It refers to God’s presence appearing in a visible or special way.
- An example of God’s Shekinah is seen in the pillar of cloud that went ahead of the Israelites: “Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them, coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness to the one side and light to the other side; so neither went near the other all night long.” Exo 14:19, Exo 14:20
- The cloud that filled Solomon’s temple was God’s shekinah presence, 2Ch 7:1. [←Back]
