The Beatitudes

Matthew 5:1-12

  1. One day as He saw the crowds gathering, Jesus went up on the mountainside and sat down. His disciples gathered around Him,
  2. and He began to teach them, saying:
  3. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.
  4. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
  5. Blessed are those who are gentle and kind, because they will inherit the earth.
  6. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, because they will be filled.
  7. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
  8. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
  9. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God.
  10. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.
  11. Blessed are you when people insult, mock, persecute and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are My followers.
  12. Rejoice and be glad because your reward is great in heaven, for they persecuted the prophets before you in the same way.

Luke 6:17-26

  1. Then he came down with them and and stood in the plain, and a large number of his disciples had gathered along with a vast multitude from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon. They came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases,
  2. and those who were tormented by evil spirits were cured.
  3. Everyone tried to touch Him, because healing power went out from Him healing them all.
  4. And turning his eyes to his disciples he said, “Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God belongs to you.
  5. Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
  6. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and insult you and reject you as evil on account of the Son of Man!
  7. Rejoice in that day, and jump for joy, because your reward is great in heaven. For their ancestors did the same things to the prophets.
  8. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your comfort already.
  9. Woe to you who are well satisfied with food now, for you will be hungry. “Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.
  10. Woe to you when all people speak well of you, for their ancestors did the same things to the false prophets.
