The Beatitudes
Matthew 5:1-12
- One day as He saw the crowds gathering, Jesus went up on the mountainside and sat down. His disciples gathered around Him,
- and He began to teach them, saying:
- Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.
- Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
- Blessed are those who are gentle and kind, because they will inherit the earth.
- Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, because they will be filled.
- Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
- Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
- Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God.
- Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.
- Blessed are you when people insult, mock, persecute and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are My followers.
- Rejoice and be glad because your reward is great in heaven, for they persecuted the prophets before you in the same way.
Luke 6:17-26
- Then he came down with them and and stood in the plain, and a large number of his disciples had gathered along with a vast multitude from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon. They came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases,
- and those who were tormented by evil spirits were cured.
- Everyone tried to touch Him, because healing power went out from Him healing them all.
- And turning his eyes to his disciples he said, “Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God belongs to you.
- Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
- Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and insult you and reject you as evil on account of the Son of Man!
- Rejoice in that day, and jump for joy, because your reward is great in heaven. For their ancestors did the same things to the prophets.
- But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your comfort already.
- Woe to you who are well satisfied with food now, for you will be hungry. “Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.
- Woe to you when all people speak well of you, for their ancestors did the same things to the false prophets.
