Teaching about Money and Possessions
Matthew 6:19-34
- Do not hoard treasures for yourselves while here on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.
- Instead, lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
- For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
- The eye is the lamp of the body. If then your eye is focused on treasure which is appropriate, your whole body will be full of light.
- But if your eye is focused on worldly treasure, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then, your focus ‘seems like’ or ‘appears to be’ light ~ but is exposed as darkness, how great is that darkness!
- No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and worldly riches.
- Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?
- Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
- Can any of you add a single hour to your life by worrying?
- And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.
- Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.
- If that’s how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won’t He do much more for you–you of little faith?
- So don’t worry about having enough food or drink or clothing.
- These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs.
- But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.
- Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will take care of itself. Seeking sufficient stuff for everyday leads to evil.
