Sin’s Power Is Broken

Romans 6:1-23

  1. Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of His wonderful grace?
  2. Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin continue living in sin?
  3. Or have you forgotten that all of us who have been baptized and share in the life of Christ Jesus, also have been baptized into His death and share in dying to sin?
  4. Therefore we were buried with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in a new way of life.
  5. For if we have been united with him in the likeness of his death, we will certainly also be united in the likeness of his resurrection.
  6. We know that our old man was crucified with him so that the body of sin would no longer dominate us, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.
  7. For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.
  8. And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with Him.
  9. We know that since Christ has been raised from the dead, he will never die again. Death no longer has any power over him.
  10. When he died, he died to sin once for all; but now that he lives, he lives forever with God.
  11. So you also should consider yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord.
  12. So don’t let sin rule your mortal body, which is going to die, neither should you obey its lustful desires.
  13. Neither yield any part of your body as an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, yield yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument of righteousness to honor God.
  14. Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.
  15. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Absolutely not!
  16. Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteousness.
  17. But thank God that, although you used to be slaves of sin, now you wholeheartedly obey this teaching we have delivered to you.
  18. And having been liberated from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness.
  19. Because of the weakness of your human nature, I am using the illustration of slavery to help you understand. Previously, you let yourselves be enslaved to impurity and ever-increasing wickedness, which led deeper and deeper into sin. Now, enslave yourselves to righteousness which will lead to sanctification and honoring God.
  20. When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness.
  21. What benefit did you gain from doing the things you are now ashamed? Did those things help you? No, for the end result of those things is death.
  22. But now, since you have been liberated from sin and become enslaved to God, you have your fruit, which leads to sanctification — and the end result is eternal life!
  23. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
