Many Samaritans Believe

Many Samaritans Believe

John 4:39-45

  1. Now many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the report of the woman who testified, “He told me everything I ever did.”
  2. Then the Samaritans begged him to stay with them, so Jesus stayed two days.
  3. And because of his words many more became believers.
  4. They said to the woman, “No longer do we believe because of your words, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this one really is the Savior of the world.”
  5. After two days he departed from there to Galilee [but not to Nazareth]. [Note]
  6. (For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.) [Note]
  7. Yet the Galileans welcomed Him, for they had been in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration and had seen everything He did there.
John Imprisoned

Luke 3:19-20

  1. And John publicly criticized Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, for marrying Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for many other wrongs he had done.
  2. So Herod put John in prison, adding this sin to his many others.

  1. John 4:43 ~ Albert Barnes Notes on the Bible:
    1. Into Galilee – Into some of the parts of Galilee, though evidently not into Nazareth, but probably direct to Cana, Joh 4:46. [←Back]
  2. John 4:44 ~ Albert Barnes Notes on the Bible:
    1. The connection of this verse with the preceding may be thus explained: “Jesus went to Galilee, but not to Nazareth, for he testified,” etc. Or, “Jesus went to Galilee, ‘although’ he had said that a prophet had no honor in his own country; yet, because he foreknew that the Galileans would many of them believe on him, he went at this time.” [←Back]
