Jesus Speaks with the Teachers

Luke 2:41-52

  1. Now Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem every year for the feast of the Passover.
  2. When Jesus was twelve years old, they attended the festival as usual.
  3. After the celebration was over, they started home to Nazareth, but his parents were unaware that Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem.
  4. Assuming He was in the traveling party, they traveled for a whole day thinking that Jesus was with them in the group, before they started looking for Him among their relatives and friends.
  5. When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to look for him.
  6. After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.
  7. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.
  8. When his parents saw him, they were overwhelmed, and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for You.”
  9. Jesus said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?”
  10. Yet his parents did not understand the meaning of what he said to them.
  11. Then he went back to Nazareth with them, and he obeyed them. But his mother kept all these things like a secret treasure in her heart.
  12. So Jesus grew both in height and in wisdom, and he was loved by God and by all who knew him.
