Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man

Mark 2:1-12

  1. When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly that He was back home.
  2. Soon the house where He was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. While He was preaching God’s word to them,
  3. four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat.
  4. Since they were not able to bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above where He was. And when they had broken through, they lowered the stretcher on which the paralytic was lying.
  5. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
  6. Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves,
  7. “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
  8. Right away Jesus understood in His spirit that they were reasoning like this within themselves and said to them, “Why are you thinking such things in your hearts?
  9. Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk’?
  10. But so you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said,
  11. “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”
  12. And immediately the man stood up, took his stretcher, and went out in front of them all. They were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

Matthew 9:1-8

  1. After getting into a boat he crossed to the other side and came to his own town. [Capernaum]
  2. Some people brought to Him a paralyzed man on a mat. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “Be encouraged, My child! Your sins are forgiven.”
  3. At this, some of the scribes said among themselves, “He’s blaspheming!”
  4. When Jesus saw their reaction he said, “Why do you respond with evil in your hearts?
  5. Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven’ or to say, ‘Stand up and walk’?
  6. But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”
  7. Then the man got up and went home.
  8. Fear swept through the crowd as they saw this happen. And they praised God for sending a man with such great authority.

Luke 5:17-26

  1. Now on one of those days, while he was teaching, there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting nearby (who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem), and the power of the Lord was with him to heal.
  2. Just then some men showed up, carrying a paralyzed man on a stretcher. They were trying to bring him in and place him before Jesus.
  3. When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
  4. When Jesus saw their faith he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”
  5. Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason: “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
  6. But perceiving their thoughts, Jesus replied to them, “Why are you reasoning this in your hearts?
  7. Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?
  8. But so you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”–He told the paralyzed man, “I tell you: get up, pick up your stretcher, and go home.”
  9. Immediately he stood up before them, picked up the stretcher he had been lying on, and went home, glorifying God.
  10. And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen incredible things today.”
