Jesus Heals a Man with Leprosy

I am following “The One Year Bible Online” chronology which places this healing at this time in our reading. However, according to Matthew 8:1, it seems more likely this healing occurred immediately after the “Sermon on the Mount.” Sometime, I may move this post to reflect the later timeline.

Mark 1:40-45

  1. A man with leprosy came and knelt in front of Jesus, begging to be healed. “If You are willing, You can heal me and make me clean,” he said.
  2. Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing. Be clean!”
  3. Instantly the leprosy disappeared, and the man was healed.
  4. Then Jesus sent him on his way with a stern warning:
  5. “Don’t tell anyone about this. Instead, go to the priest and let him examine you. Take along the offering required in the law of Moses for those who have been healed of leprosy. This will be a public testimony that you have been cleansed.”
  6. But the man went and spread the word, proclaiming to everyone what had happened. As a result, large crowds soon surrounded Jesus, and He couldn’t publicly enter a town anywhere. He had to stay out in the secluded places, but people from everywhere kept coming to Him.

Matthew 8:1-4

  1. After he came down from the mountain, large crowds followed him.
  2. And a leper approached, and bowed low before him, saying, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
  3. Reaching out His hand He touched him, saying, “I am willing; be made clean.” Immediately his disease was healed.
  4. Then Jesus said to him, “See that you do not speak to anyone, but go, show yourself to a priest, and bring the offering that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

Luke 5:12-16

  1. While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came to him who was covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he bowed down with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
  2. Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” He said. “Be healed!” And instantly the leprosy disappeared.
  3. Then Jesus instructed him not to tell anyone what had happened. He said, “Go to the priest and let him examine you. Take along the offering required in the law of Moses for those who have been healed of leprosy. This will be a public testimony that you have been cleansed.”
  4. But despite Jesus’ instructions, the report of His power spread even faster, and vast crowds came to hear Him preach and to be healed of their diseases.
  5. And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.
