Jesus Clears the Temple
John 2:13-25
- It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem.
- He found in the temple courts those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers sitting at tables.
- So he made a whip of cords and drove them all out of the temple courts, with the sheep and the oxen. He scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.
- To those who sold the doves he said, “Get these things out of here! Do not make my Father’s house a house of merchandise.
- Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures:
"Zeal for Your house has consumed me."
- Then the Jews asked him, “What miraculous sign can you show us? Can you prove your authority to do all of this?”
- Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”
- The Jews then said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?”
- But Jesus was speaking about the temple of his body.
- So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this. And they believed the Scripture and the statement Jesus had made.
- Now while Jesus was in Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover, many people believed in his name because they saw the miraculous signs.
- But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, because he knew all men,
- and because He did not need anyone to testify about man; for He Himself knew what was in man.
