Jesus Calls Levi (Matthew)
Mark 2:13-17
- Jesus went out again by the sea. The whole crowd came to him, and he taught them.
- As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.
- Later, Levi invited Jesus and His disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners; for there were many who followed him.
- When the experts in the law and the Pharisees saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, they said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
- When Jesus heard this he said to them, “Those who are healthy do not need a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
Matthew 9:9-13
- As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the place for collecting taxes. Jesus said to him, “Follow me.” So he got up and followed Jesus.
- Later, Matthew invited Jesus and His disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners.
- When the Pharisees saw this, they asked His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
- But when Jesus heard this, He said, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick.
- Go and learn what this means: I desire mercy and not sacrifice. For I didn’t come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
Luke 5:27-32
- After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax booth. “Follow me,” he said to him.
- And he got up and followed him, leaving everything behind.
- Then Levi gave a great banquet in his house for Jesus, and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others sitting at the table with them.
- But the Pharisees and their experts in the law complained to his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
- Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy people who need a doctor, but the sick.
- I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
