A Discussion about the Sabbath

Mark 2:23-28

  1. One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, His disciples began breaking off heads of grain to eat.
  2. But the Pharisees said to Jesus, “Why are your disciples breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”
  3. Jesus said to them, “Haven’t you ever read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
  4. How David entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest and ate the sacred bread–which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests–and also gave some to his companions?”
  5. Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath.
  6. Therefore the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

Matthew 12:1-8

  1. At about that time Jesus was walking through some grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, so they began breaking off some heads of grain and eating them.
  2. When the Pharisees saw this, they protested saying, “Your disciples are breaking the Sabbath law!”
  3. Jesus said to them, “Haven’t you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
  4. How David and his companions entered the house of God, and they ate the sacred bread, which is not lawful for him or for those with him to eat, but only for the priests?
  5. Haven’t you read the Law? It tells how every Sabbath day the priests in the temple have to do their work on that day. But they are not considered guilty.
  6. I tell you that one greater than the temple is here.
  7. If you had known what this means: ‘I want mercy and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent.
  8. For the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”

Luke 6:1-5

  1. Jesus was going through the grain fields on a Sabbath, and his disciples picked some heads of wheat, rubbed them in their hands, and ate them.
  2. But some Pharisees said, “Why are you breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”
  3. Jesus replied, “Haven’t you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
  4. He went into the house of God and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests can eat. He also gave some to his companions.”
  5. Then He told them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
